Cyclists and pedestrians urged to report crimes on M4

There have been three reported incidents this year at the Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve.

WARD 35 Councillor, Nicole Bollman has warned athletes using the M4 Bridge in the vicinity of Beachwood Mangroves to be vigilant and to report any encounters with lawbreakers.

Bollman was a victim of a robbery at the Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve earlier this month when a suspect held her up with a broken bottle, demanding her cell phone.

The incident was the third reported this year at the reserve. She reported the incident at the Durban North police station on Norrie Avenue.

The warning comes after a recent visit to the area.

“While walking with the security guards at the Beachwood Mangroves yesterday, the one chap mentioned to us that a cyclist, the day before, had almost been robbed, but that after apprehending the assailant, the cyclist was nowhere to be seen, no details left, no case opened at SAPS,” said Bollman.

Reporting incidents is an important step in fighting crime, added Bollman.

“It is imperative that we, as a community, do our part to putting a stop to criminal activity by reporting these cases, irrespective of how trivial they might seem or busy we might be. It might be a near miss for you today but an assault on someone else tomorrow,” she said.

Bollman added that she did not condone athletes using areas of the M4 freeway that are not permitted to be used. To report crime, call Durban North SAPS on 031 560 8136, Greenwood Park SAPS on 031 571 6512.
