DECEMBER is the time of year where residents get in their cars and drive around to look for homes with Christmas lights and holiday music. One home that has this in abundance is the Munsami home in Somerset Park which every night illuminates Somerset Drive with more than a 1 000 festive lights.

Colourful, sparkling and twinkling lights line the walls and edges of the house, giving the appearance of a wondrous palace. The luminous attractions also draws in a crowd every evening from 7pm with the switch on at the home known as the Durban North pole.

The visual treat features more than 150 different twinkling bulbs and decorations.

Northglen News recently caught up with Vasu Munsami, who explained why he put on the lights.

“Every year the decorations grow bigger and bigger. We’ve now managed to incorporate some of the trees across the road which have Christmas lights on it adding a more festive feel. I remember a time when families would travel to the Workshop and Dr Pixley Kaseme Street (West Street) to see the lights and there was always a sense of wonder with what we saw. So that’s what I wanted to recreate here at my home,” he explained.

Munsami added the response from the community and sense of awe among young children was one of the reasons he continues the tradition.

The display lights up every night from 7pm (weather permitting) and runs until 9pm on most weeknights. To find out more about the home’s decorations visit their Facebook and Instagram pages @durbannorthpole.
