10 nabbed for drunk driving on M4

Captain Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, said despite warnings by police, the trend of drunk driving persisted.

DURBAN North SAPS have once again urged motorists and residents to heed their warning of drinking and driving.

This comes after 10 people were arrested for drunk driving on Friday evening on the M4.

The operation was held by the station in conjunction with Metro Police.

Captain Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, said despite warnings by police, the trend of drunk driving persisted.

“We’ve sent out several warnings but despite this drivers have still been breaking the law. We’ve arrested more than 150 people since the beginning of this year. Being arrested for drunk driving is not a misdemeanour, it is a serious crime and a preventable choice.

“We have a zero tolerance approach for drunken driving, so appeals for leniency because some people view this as a ‘lesser crime’ are ridiculous. We will continue to host roadblocks to try to ensure safety on our roads,” Deokaran said.
