Tiffany makes a splash for SA synchro team

The sport is hard work and relies on core strength, flexibility and powerful lungs. Someone who can attest to this is Danville Park Girls' High School learner, Tiffany Mather.

WHEN it comes to the sport of synchronised swimming, or as it sometimes referred to as ‘water ballet’, there are many adjectives to describe the sport of elegantly choreographed moves and fantastic costumes. The word you won’t find in the description of what the sport is ‘easy’.

The sport is hard work and relies on core strength, flexibility and powerful lungs. Someone who can attest to this is Danville Park Girls’ High School learner, Tiffany Mather.

The 15-year-old recently represented the South African synchro swimming team at the FINA World Youth Artistic Swimming Championships in Bratislava, Slovakia.

While the national team finished in last place at the champs, the experience was a life-changing one for the talented youngster.

“This was my first time overseas and my first ever national call-up and I loved every second of it. Even though we placed 17th out of 17 nations we’ve definitely improved and we were able to learn and experience so much in Slovakia. This has just inspired me to work harder and pursue my long-term goal of making a senior SA team for synchro,” she explained.

Mather was introduced to the sport by her mom and the synchro swimmer has not looked back since her first lesson.

“My mom was also a former Danville girl and when she was at school, synchro was offered as a sport. She would often talk about how amazing the sport is and I only realised this after my first lesson with Cygnets Swimming Club. My mom actually didn’t even tell me about the lesson, she surprised me and I fell in love with the sport on that day,” she explained. “Shortly after my lesson she bought me a pair of slops with the South African flag design around it as a motivation for me to make the South African team and who would’ve guessed that would be the case two years later.”

Mather has her eyes set firmly on the prize and hopes to secure a senior SA team call-up and compete at the Olympic Games.
