New promenade paves way for Durban North walking group

As a newly qualified tour guide, Durban North resident, Alison Chadwick thinks the extension will add value to Durban tourism.

A GROUP of Durban North residents, who meet every week for a promenade walk, are looking forward to extending their workout as the promenade extension opens this month.

“About three years ago I joined a group that met at 5am every Monday to walk. We want to go right to the end of the pier now. We usually walk for about an hour and 20 minutes – covering 9.5km in total. With the extension, we will probably complete 10.5km. I think it adds an extra 750 metres, so that’s another 1.5kmone and a half kms added to our walk in the morning. We end off with a coffee,” said one resident, Alison Chadwick.

As a newly qualified tour guide, Chadwick feels the extension will add value to Durban tourism.

“I’ve worked down in this area for about 12 years and I became passionate about all the old buildings and the history of the area and I started doing research. I’ve done about 20 tours so far. If you just look at the amount of people rollerblading, cycling and walking on the promenade on Saturdays and Sundays, it’s wonderful to see. I love seeing so many people out early exercising,” she said.

Chadwick thinks the new promenade is wonderful for Durban.

“I absolutely love the extension. I am a member of the Point Water Club, so I actually can’t wait for them to move back into their new premises so I can start swimming in the sea again,” she said.

“My dad is 92 years old and he loves sitting and watching the boats coming and going from the harbour, he’s going to love the new promenade,” she added.
