Call for harsher sentence for student in UKZN murder case

BCom student Simukelo Zondi's charred remains were discovered in a rugby field near the university's Westville campus over the weekend.

THE African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) in KwaZulu-Natal has called on the courts to hand down a harsh sentence to the student accused of killing another student at the University of KwaZulu Natal’s Westville Campus.

Final year BCom student, Simukelo Zondi’s charred remains were discovered in a rugby field near the university’s Westville campus on the weekend.

The 24-year-old had been reported missing on Wednesday last week.

Khayelihle Nzimande (25), a BCom student, has been charged with Zondi’s murder and was arrested on Friday.

He appeared in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday and was remanded in custody. The matter will resume on 21 October.

In a statement the ANCYL KZN provincial secretary, Thanduxolo Sabelo, said they were ‘concerned’ and ‘disturbed’ about the murders of students.

“As the ANCYL in KZN we’re very concerned and deeply disturbed about the increasing number of incidents in which students are being murdered. We applaud swift action by our law enforcement agencies in making a swift arrest in this matter. The protection of students in any learning environment should be a priority,” said Sabelo.

“We urge students to calm down and resist from taking the law into their own hands but rather focus on their studies so that they accomplish their dreams,” he adds.
