Final piece of Durban promenade falls into place
Once opened, the promenade will have a seamless flow from Blue Lagoon to the harbour, at roughly eight kilometres in total length.
THE final piece of the beachfront promenade extension has been laid and is one of the key features of the architectural masterpiece that’s expected to get Durban residents excited.
Contractors at the site laid the final concrete slab in the “Southern Plaza” an open space at the southernmost end of the elevated promenade sitting alongside the harbour’s northern breakwaters.
Standing at the Southern Plaza will give visitors an unrestricted view of the harbour entrance and maritime activities such as ships moving in and out of the port.

“Durban residents may well remember the restaurant that used to operate at the harbour, where you could watch the ships go in and out. The extended promenade brings people the same opportunity, to come here and watch the harbour activities,” said Afika Ndima, project manager for the R400-million beachfront promenade extension.
Residents will have to wait a few more weeks before the 750 metre stretch promenade is opened towards the end of October.
“We are nearing the finish line with the project. The contractors are busy with the final activities and are on schedule and within budget. Some of the final touches include polishing of the concrete, installation of ablution and shower facilities, placing of street furniture such as benches and planter boxes, wooden decking and planting of greenery,” said Ndima.
