Playing fields leveled in friendly cricket game

The KwaZulu-Natal Blind Cricket team celebrated a special win when they beat the Hollywoodbets Dolphins in a friendly match at the Kingsmead Oval on Saturday, coming out convincing victors by nine wickets.

THE Hollywoodbets Dolphins took on the KZN Blind Cricket Team in a friendly match at the Kingsmead Oval on Saturday. Some of the Dolphins players used specialist ‘blackout’ glasses to give them an appreciation and respect to the challenges blind cricketers face.

The Dolphins players had to make use of the sense of hearing as the ball used in blind cricket is filled with ball bearings that provide audible cues.

However as newly-appointed coach of the Dolphins, Imraan Khan, attested to, it is not that easy. “Our goal in this game was to create awareness about blind cricket and it’s definitely given the players added respect for the blind cricketers.

“The sport is extremely difficult and I think in a way its created awareness for the game which was our goal. As teams who represent the province I don’t see why games like this should not happen in the future,” he said.

Dolphins batsman, Vaughn van Jaarsveld also expressed his respect

“I had seen blind cricketers play when I represented the Lions in Gauteng but it was a while ago. Getting refreshed on Saturday and seeing how the blind cricket team go about their routine and play the game has given me an added respect. Knowing what the players deal with every single day of their lives and on the cricket field has been a humbling experience.
