Cyclist appeals for witnesses after Umhlanga Rocks Drive hit-and-run

Anees Ally was with a group of riders training for the upcoming Tsogo Sun Amashova Durban Classic when he was struck on Umhlanga Rocks Drive.

A CYCLIST has appealed for witnesses to come forward following a hit-and-run on Umhlanga Rocks Drive on Saturday (3 August) at about 5.15am.

Anees Ally was with a group of riders training for the upcoming Tsogo Sun Amashova Durban Classic when he was struck from behind. The 25-year-old suffered a crushed tibia and a hairline fracture of his fibula leaving him in a cast for the next six weeks.

Ally also suffered severe bruising to his lower back.

“I normally travel to Durban North to cycle because it’s safer. A group of riders from KT Cycles were on a training ride and my group had pulled ahead of me when the incident occurred close to the entrance of the Grand Floridian.

“I just felt this heavy jolt to my back and the next time I opened my eyes I was staring at the sky in severe pain. Luckily a mountain biker who was cycling behind saw me and came to my aid. As did a running club who happened to go past at the time,” he said.

So severe was the impact that the left wing mirror of the vehicle snapped off and was found next to Ally.

Durban North SAPS spokesman, Capt Raymond Deokaran, confirmed a case had been opened following the hit-and-run.

“We know the vehicle involved was a silver Nissan. We are now trying to track the details of the vehicle and the owner to find out why he fled the scene. We are also appealing to residents and businesses in the area who have CCTV cameras facing Umhlanga Rocks Drive in that vicinity to contact us as we try and trace the owner of the vehicle,” he said.

If you have any information that could help the police, contact Capt Deokaran on 083 632 2849.
