Northlands Girls’ show love for guide dogs association

Northlands Girls' High School learners and staff recently raised R7 400 for the South African Guide Dogs Association for the Blind.

THE South African Guide Dogs Association for the Blind said it is blown away by the fundraising spirit of Northlands Girls’ High School whose learners and staff recently raised R7 400 for the association. Marketing manager for the association, Ané Roux, said the school had co-sponsored a puppy in training and had now begun to raise funds to co-sponsor another.

“One of the ways which we spread awareness about the association and what we do is by visiting local schools in Durban. It is really a way for us to show what the association does and create more awareness for the visually impaired. Northlands Girls’ has been fantastic, we’ve twice before visited the school to give talks and one of the teachers, Cathy van Gent, got in touch with us and said they were interested in co-sponsoring a puppy. Currently the puppy, Pandora, is in training and at the end of this year she’ll be evaluated to see whether she is a service dog or guide dog. We’ve created a long-lasting relationship with the school and it’s fantastic to see them support us in this way,” Roux said.

Roux also explained the innovative way that schools can track their fundraising progress.

“We introduced a Guide Dog tree, which is a little tree cut out with branches to hang blue ribbons to track every R100 donated. Of course the school raised more than R5 000 so they couldn’t fit that many ribbons on the cut out itself but they were able to fill a tree with ribbons.

Northlands Girls’ High School educator, Cathy van Gent, who spearheaded the fundraising drive, said she too was blown away by the support.

“The whole school really took to the fundraising drive. We’ve had Ané come to our school on two occasions and explain what the association is all about. I myself have, in the past sold raffle tickets to raise funds for the association. The guide dogs have always been close to my heart. I’ve seen the work the guide dogs do and it’s particularly impressive. We are just so glad we’ve been able to give back this way,” she said.
