WATCH: Massive fire ravages several shacks

The blaze has swept through an informal settlement.

THE Durban Fire Department is fighting a massive blaze that has spread across several shacks on Johanna Road in Sea Cow Lake, north of Durban.

Spokesperson for Rescue Care Paramedics, Garrith Jamieson said they were on the scene ready to assist.

“Multiple shacks are well alight. The Durban fire department is tackling this fire which is quite severe. Multiple shacks have been destroyed, multiple people have been displaced. The smoke is severe and traffic is severly backed up on the freeway along both sides of the carrigeway,” he said.

Smoke from the blaze bellowed into the sky as paramedics arrived on the scene moments ago.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage.
