City warns of fundraising scam for Zandile Gumede

Gumede is currently on 30 days leave after she was arrested and charged last month for fraud and corruption for a Durban Solid Waste contract from 2016 worth more than R200-million.

THE eThekwini Municipality has warned residents about a group of scammers randomly approaching people, requesting for donations towards eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede’s legal costs.

Gumede is currently on 30 days leave after she was arrested and charged last month for fraud and corruption for a  Durban Solid Waste contract from 2016 worth more than R200-million.

“The municipality would like to warn residents that Mayor Gumede has not asked for such donations and is not part of the scheme. This is a scam and anyone who is approached by these unscrupulous individuals must report the matter to the nearest police station,” said City spokesperson, Mandla Nsele.

He added the municipality is investigating the allegations.
