CHOC, through its training and awareness programme aims to improve survival rates by creating awareness of the early warning signs of childhood cancer developed by CHOC and The South African Children’s Cancer Study Group (SACCSG). This is done by training health professionals and traditional health practitioners and by creating general awareness among the public.

Monique Every, vice chairperson of Durban Roller Derby said this was the first time they had the chance to partner with CHOC.

“We were really excited that they reached out to us and not only because we got to skate around in awesome cow suits. As a league, Durban Roller Derby is committed to giving back to the community around us in any way that we can. Raising awareness for organisations like CHOC & Umgeni Community Empowerment Centre’s Anti-Human Trafficking initiative — gives us the opportunity to contribute to the causes that we care about, even if we’re not always able to do so financially.

“We also feel that being visible in the community helps to change the overall perception of roller derby; we may have crazy hair colours and tattoos but we’re also serious sports people who are passionate about giving back. Expect to see Durban Roller Derby out and about a whole lot more this year,” she enthused.
