Durban North resident loses over R3 000 in online fraud case

Durban North SAPS said they were increasingly seeing more cases of people being defrauded online.

DURBAN North police have opened a case of fraud after a man was scammed out of more than R3 000.

According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the station, the victim had spotted an online advert for an iPad Mini at a reasonable price.

“The ‘seller’ said the iPad was on sale for R3 000 and told the Durban North resident that he would have to pay a further R299 for a courier fee as he was in Pietermaritzburg. The victim deposited the amount into banking details provided and awaited delivery.

“The fraudster sent a message saying he had received the money. However, since the money was deposited, the ‘seller’ has not answered his phone and has disappeared with the money. The local resident since tried to contact the number but there was no answer. In most of the cases we opened last year, the scam artists take the money without delivering,” Deokaran said.

Deokaran said they were increasingly seeing more cases of people being defrauded online.

No arrests have yet been made.
