Tammy brings home gold from world champs

Mckie along with Durban North resident, Alice Edward, Cape Town's Kira Bester and Johannesburg's Milan Erasmus won gold in the junior mixed Simulated Emergency Rescue Competition (SERC).

MOUNT Edgecombe resident, Tamryn McKie provided the South African junior lifesaving team the perfect start to the Lifesaving World Championships (LWC) held in Adelaide (Australia) in December last year.

Mckie along with Durban North resident, Alice Edward, Cape Town’s Kira Bester and Johannesburg’s Milan Erasmus won gold in the junior mixed Simulated Emergency Rescue Competition (SERC).

The Simulated Emergency Response Competition tests judgment, knowledge, and abilities of four lifesavers who, acting as a team, apply lifesaving skills in a simulated emergency situation unknown to them prior to the start. The Our Lady of Fatima Dominican Convent School Grade 11 learner, competing in her first world champs said she was stoked with the gold medal.

“Our scenario was saving drunk people in the pool and we had to do it within a two minute time period. I thought we did an excellent job in saving people in the simulation but we didn’t think we’d be gold medalists leaving the pool. We also couldn’t see the other teams respond so we didn’t really have a sense of how good our performance was. It was only when one of the competitors said we had placed in the top three. At that time I was so happy to place in the top three but winning gold for the SA team was fantastic. We were so proud of what we’d achieved,” she explained.

McKie also took part in the surfski event where she placed fifth, and the ironwoman race, where she placed eighth in the individual events.

“This being my first world champs I knew it would be tough but I felt I put my best foot forward. I wanted to make my family proud back home and I was happy with my results. Considering the fact that I was competing with girls older than me I was happy with what I achieved. This also helped me gain international experience,” the Marine Surf Lifesaving Club member said.
