031 Bodyboard Club launches

Northglen News recently met with some of the men and women behind the club to find out what they were all about.

A GROUP of riders, parents and industry based businesses have come together to start the 031 Bodyboarding Club. Northglen News recently met with some of the men and women behind the club to find out what they were all about.

Ryan Pape, contest and technical director of 031 said the idea was to start a ‘social and fun’ club to bring everyone together.

“What is great is we have a large group of riders, both young and old. A few of us are parents and have history within the sport and the idea was to revitalise the sport but also equip the younger generation through development. The sport is seeing a resurgence now with three of the top five riders in the world currently currently from South Africa,” he explained.

“This club was set up as feeder scheme into the provincial bodyboarding associations. We also have ambitions developing the sport via inter-school events, and dedicated girl and ladies’ sessions and development sessions. Tracy Delport, a KZN bodyboarder offers her expertise to help equip the younger generation to succeed.”

Pape’s sentiments were echoed by fellow club member, Ryan Kavanagh.

“We’ve all been involved in bodyboarding for a very long time and are passionate about the sport. Like Ryan (Pape) said our aim is to get more people down to the beach and into the sport. Our club is open to anyone who wants to learn and be part of our club,” he said.
