New crime syndicate targets manhole covers

According to the station's spokesperson sergeant Vincent Mthembu, two manhole covers were stolen in two days.

GREENWOOD Park Police have urged community members with information that could lead to the arrests of criminals targeting manhole covers to come forward. According to the station’s spokesperson sergeant Vincent Mthembu, two manhole covers were stolen in two days.

He said,”Recently the manhole at the bottom of the Steeple Road was left uncovered. Shortly after that the same incident happened on Kew Road.”

He has urged community members to look out for criminals doing this, saying it poses a threat to the community. The reason behind the thefts, according to Mthembu is for the sale of scrap metal.

“Leaving manholes uncovered compromises the flow of traffic and may lead to fatal accidents. It is evident that these covers are being sold to the scrap metal dealers. We will start conducting regular raids at various scrap metal dealers to make sure they are not part of this syndicate. Whoever is found in possession of these covers or similar metal but can’t account for it, will be charged. They might also face the cancellation of operating licence,” he said.

Mthembu also commended City officials for promptly replacing the caps before anyone was injured.
Members of the community with any information regarding this can report it to the Greenwood Park police by anonymously calling 031 5716512/3/4 or the crime stop number 0860010111.
