Help make a difference with Waterloo literacy project

The Open a Book for a Child is looking for volunteers.

OPEN a Book for a Child is looking for volunteers to help them run their Shine Literacy Hour at Waterloo Primary School.

The programme is about story sharing, creating a love of books, expanding the horizons of the children and supporting those who are at risk of not learning to read, which is crucial for long-term success in today’s world.

Maddy Loynes, a longstanding member of the programme urged residents to volunteer and get involved to make a difference.

“We need more volunteers to help us run the Shine Literacy Hour at the school, which is a 20 minute drive from uMhlanga. Our volunteers give support to children in Grades 2 and 3 to help strengthen their English reading, writing and speaking skills. No previous experience is needed and volunteers will receive training and ongoing support. All you need is a love of children and a spare hour or two a week,” she said.

The Waterloo Reading and Literacy programme is now into its eighth year explained Loynes.

This year’s Orientation Day will take place on Wednesday, 30 January from 9am to 11.30am at Garden Court uMhlanga, (corner. Aurora Drive and Centenary Boulevard).
