Snakes on the move this summer

The 40-year-old said he has already received dozens of call-outs for a number of venomous snake species including Black Mambas, Green Mambas, Spitting Cobras, Night Adders and Stiletto Snakes.

SUMMER in KwaZulu-Natal means everybody is heading outdoors to enjoy the sunshine – resident snakes included. From August to the end of May, there is little rest for Sunningdale’s snake man, Jason Arnold.

The 40-year-old said he has already received dozens of call-outs for a number of venomous snake species including Black Mambas, Green Mambas, Spitting Cobras, Night Adders and Stiletto Snakes.

“Peak snake season is upon us in KZN and the calls for help are streaming in at an alarming rate. There will be an increase in snake activity now as it warms up and most species are in full activity mode.

“I’d like to just warn people to be aware and to stay calm if they happen to come across a snake. Don’t go into a frenzy. Stay calm and get kids and pets away from the area and monitor the snake from a safe distance and call a professional and reputable snake catcher,” he said.

Arnold said the best way not to get bitten by a snake was not to interfere with it. Snakes only become scared and defensive when they are put in a position where they feel their life is being threatened.
