Fraud victim arrests suspects and hands them over to SAPS

The suspects aged 24 are due to appear in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court soon facing fraud charges.

A MAN who had fallen victim to fraud in November this year, managed to conduct his own investigation, track down the suspects, and hand them over to the Durban North SAPS recently.

According to KZN SAPS spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane, the suspects aged 24 are due to appear in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court soon facing fraud charges.

“It’s alleged the victim (36) made an application to buy a house through an estate agent. His application was turned down because it appeared that he owned a second vehicle which was still under finance. The victim was surprised as he did not own a second vehicle. He then began with his own investigation by obtaining copies of documentation allegedly used to buy the vehicle from a car dealership in uMhlanga Rocks.

“After he obtained the documents, a case of fraud was opened at Durban North police station. On further investigation, he traced the suspects who might be involved in this fraud through Facebook and managed to apprehend two of them on Florida Road in Durban,” Zwane said.

The victim then took the duo to his house in KwaMashu while waiting for the third suspect involved in the fraud case to arrive.

“The third suspect did not pitch up and he decided to hand over the two suspects to Durban North SAPS. The incident was initially reported to police as a kidnapping and various police Units worked around the clock to trace the men,” he explained.
