City clamps down on irregular expenditure

According to the Auditor General’s report, the CIIU saved the City R32m in possible irregular expenditure through its proactive investigations.

THE eThekwini Municipality’s City Integrity and Investigations Unit (CIIU) has revealed that it has saved the City more than R30 million in possible irregular expenditure.

Last week, in partnership with the Association for Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE), the CIIU hosted a seminar aimed at creating a platform for engagement on issues of fraud and corruption.

Citing numerous global examples where people in power were convicted of corruption, Mbuso Ngcobo, Head of CIIU said, “Corruption happens at the expense of millions of poor people still waiting for a better life. EThekwini wants to leave an indelible mark by seizing an opportunity to share ideas, experience and knowledge with an array of experts. We have to work together if we are to end fraud and corruption. It is everyone’s responsibility.”

He continued to say the CIIU has managed to save the City millions of Rands.

“The City Integrity and Investigations Unit operates autonomously and remains determined to put an end to fraud and corruption in the city. Its operations are yielding positive results and it continues to operate without fear or favour. According to the Auditor General’s report, CIIU saved the City R32m in possible irregular expenditure through its proactive investigations. This is an achievement we are proud of,” he added.

Thabani Luthuli, chairperson of Municipal Public Accounts Committee, who represented Mayor Zandile Gumede, said, “We must root out the culture of corruption in our society. Nobody must bribe or pay an official to get a government contract. People must not treat it as a norm that they must buy cool drinks for police officers in order to get their driver’s licence. Nobody must be forced or bribed to award a tender to a particular individual. Our message is clear, no to corruption and bribery.”
