Load shedding can’t be ruled out for remainder of year, says Eskom

Currently 10 power stations have less than 20-day coal stock-piles.

LOAD shedding cannot be ruled out for the remainder of the year. That’s the word from Eskom’s Group Chief Executive Officer Phakamani Hadebe. On Friday, Hadebe addressed the media saying the power utility is facing ‘major challenges’.

Hadebe said Eskom is facing severe challenges including the deterioration of coal power stations and coal stock-piles.

Currently 10 power stations have less than 20-day coal stock-piles.

“That’s a challenge, we’ve made an effort in changing the status quo, but we haven’t reached a level where the situation is totally different,” said Hadebe.

With less than adequate stock-piles, the utility has had to rely more on Open Cycle Gas Turbine (OCGTs).

“The current system is not optimal,” he said.

He added the utility had plans to address its challenges using the Nine Point Plan.

The Nine Point Plan is aimed at addressing pressing challenges at the utility, including fixing full load losses and trips, fixing coal stock-piles issues, addressing challenges at new plants as well as fixing units on long-term forced outages, among others.

Hadebe urged the public to use electricity sparingly over peak times.
