Calls for speed-calming on Margaret Maytom following crashes

Residents say they are concerned for themselves and their children following a number of crashes on the busy road.

RESIDENTS of Margaret Maytom Avenue have appealed to the eThekwini Traffic Authority (ETA) to consider implementing speed-calming measures on the road. This follows three accidents in recent weeks, two of which occurred on the same day, where vehicles have smashed into residential walls.

In the most recent incident, a driver rounding the bend (going towards Virginia) allegedly lost control of his vehicle and crashed into Candice Symmons’ home.

The vehicle had not only damaged the wall but also destroyed the driveway gate. The damage is estimated at around R20 000.
The vehicle was wedged between two walls.

“I’ve heard from other residents there have been various accidents on the road. We want the Municipality to do something before someone loses their lives. The driver and the passenger of the vehicle that crashed into my wall were injured and my worry is this could lead to a fatality if nothing is being done.

“I’m so worried about reversing out of my driveway as I have my two daughters with me. What happens if a driver crashes into us, there’s no way to go. Something urgently needs to be done,” she said.

Kirsten Isted, echoed Symmons’ sentiments saying her wall had been taken out and her domestic worker had a close call with a vehicle just missing her after losing control.

“We don’t want speed humps as we feel this may launch vehicles into someone’s yard. The speed that drivers do going down Margaret Maytom Avenue is ridiculous. Some of the buses also speed down the road which could cause serious damager.

“We would like to see armco barriers, like the ones on the freeway put up to give the residents some form of protection. Even some warning lights would be welcome,” Isted said.
