Paige set sights on lifesaving world champs

The 15-year-old will be representing the South African junior team at the world champs and said she is unsure of what to expect at the games.

UNDAUNTED by the prospect of facing some tough competition at this year’s Lifesaving World Championships (LWC) in Adelaide (Australia), Paige Horn, is hoping to do her best and make her club and country proud.

The 15-year-old will be representing the South African junior team at the world champs and said she is unsure of what to expect at the games.

“It’s my first international competition so I’m really excited. I feel it will offer me more of a learning curve which is invaluable for a novice on the international stage. With the world champs being held again in 2020, I feel it will give me the perfect guage on what areas I need to improve on.

“That being said I still would like to do well in my events. We haven’t been told what specific events we will be competing in but I know I want to make SA, my club (Umhlanga Rocks Surf Lifesaving Club) and my school proud,” she said.

The Our Lady of Fatima DCS learner said she expects the toughest competition to come from the home country and New Zealand.

“Lifesaving is a massive sport in Australia and New Zealand so I think their athletes will be pretty pumped to do well on home turf,” she said.

Horn who only started lifesaving five years ago said the sport has now become her passion.

“I was having lunch with a friend and a member of the Rox Lifesaving Club was present and overheard me saying how much I loved swimming. He suggested joining the club and I went for my first practice on a Sunday and I’ve never looked back,” she said.
