City commits to taking down illegal billboards

Currently, the General Advertising Branch has reviewed the Outdoor Advertising By-law which will be promulgated soon.

THE eThekwini Municipality’s Development Planning Environment and Management Unit has strengthened its efforts to remove illegal billboards around the city.

On 10 October at the Economic Development and Planning Committee meeting, it was announced that a three-year contract has been signed with a service provider to remove the billboards.

The Unit Head Musa Mbhele said the appointment comes after an increase in illegal posters being erected on public or privately owned property without proper approval or permission from the General Advertising Branch.

“The Unit took a decision by procuring a service provider in compliance with Supply Chain Policy to assist the General Advertising Branch by removing illegal signs erected without Council approval for a three year period,” he explained.

According to a report tabled at the Committee meeting by appointing the contractor it will assist the Branch to be proactive in responding to the removal of illegal signs. Furthermore, the report states that Council regulates all forms of advertising in terms of policy and by-laws.

“This is to ensure that business or organisations are given equal opportunity to advertise with due regard to public safety and reasonable standards of appearance that will not degrade or impact the amenities of neighbourhoods,” Mbhele added.

Currently, the General Advertising Branch has reviewed the Outdoor Advertising By-law which will be promulgated soon.

“In this regard, the Branch planned ahead and procured a service provider to remove illegal billboards, hence this function is critical in enforcing by-laws,” he ended.
