Armed men steal 50K from uMhlanga construction site

The suspects armed with handguns held up the businessman as he was paying his workers' salaries.

A BUSINESSMAN was robbed of his cell phone and a large sum of money when paying his workers last Friday at an Izinga Ridge (uMhlanga) construction site.

According to Durban North SAPS spokesman, Capt Raymond Deokaran, the businessman was paying around 30 workers when three men, posing as workers, walked up to him with weapons in their hands.

“The suspects demanded the cash, a total of R50 000 and took his cell phone. The suspects then fled on foot. At this point no arrests have been made” he said.

Deokaran urged businesses to, where possible, pay workers and staff using an EFT.

“We would urge business owners to take extra precautions when dealing with large amounts of cash as these types of cases are very prevalent around payday and the festive season. Consider arranging for electronic transfers of wages to your contract or casual labourers’ personal bank accounts,” Deokaran said.
