Another smash-and-grab on M41 off-ramp

Police believe the opportunistic criminals are targeting female drivers in particular.

THERE has been another smash-and-grab on the M41 off-ramp (towards Umhlanga Rocks Drive) on Tuesday night. According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, the incident occurred at about 8.15pm.

This is the second incident at the same intersection in the last 10 days.

Police believe the opportunistic criminals are targeting female drivers in particular.

“In this incident, the lady’s handbag was on her passenger seat. She didn’t see the suspect until the window was smashed. He stole her handbag, which contained her sunglasses, cash, cosmetics and other items before fleeing into the bushes,” he said.

While there has been a reduction in smash-and-grabs this year, there has been more than 14 cases Northglen News has reported on this particular stretch of road alone in the last three years.

Deokaran urged residents to keep their valuables out of sight when parked or at traffic lights.

“Hide your valuables. Car floors, dashboards and seats are not good places to leave items,” he said.
