Ride in groups where possible, urges cycle safety forum
The warning follows a serious accident on the M4 which left a cyclist nursing a shattered collarbone, four broken ribs and a collapsed lung.
CHAIRPERSON of the eThekwini Cycle Safe Forum, Aroon Patel, said he was deeply concerned by a serious accident involving two cyclists riding on the M4 recently.
Tony Swanepoel (59) of the East Coast Cycling Club, was on a training ride ahead of the Amashova when he was caught by hanging wire left across the cycling lane.
Swanepoel was cycling around 35km/h when a wire hung from a tree across the cycling lane tripped him up causing him to fall. The 59-year-old shattered his collarbone, broke four of his ribs and suffered a collapsed lung in the horrific incident.

Patel said he urged cyclists to ride in groups where possible following the incident.
“I was shocked when I heard about what happened. So often we as the forum have managed the relation between cyclists and motorists and vice-versa, however, we’ve not had anything like this.
“I’m encouraging cyclists to ride in large groups where possible and to avoid riding solo. If possible I urge cyclists to either carry medical cards or bracelets to let those who respond to the accident have access to emergency contacts. This last incident has been deeply concerning and I hope it’s not being used as a method to target cyclists,” he said.
