Checkers staff arrested for stealing goods

Police recovered approximately R8 000 worth of goods taken from the store.

DURBAN North SAPS have confirmed that four employees from Checkers Virginia were arrested along with an accomplice last week in connection with theft.

The station’s crime prevention unit were on a routine patrol when they spotted men loading boxes of goods into a vehicle at the Checkers at 9.50pm on Sunday last week.

“As our officers pulled up to the vehicle, the suspects ran, with one fleeing on foot while three others fled in the getaway vehicle,” Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS explained.

“A high speed chase took place on the M4 with the remaining suspects being arrested. We found goods valued at approximately R8 000 in the vehicle and four of the suspects were confirmed to be staff at the supermarket chain store,” he said.

Boxes of deodorants, baby cream, soaps, oil as well as food items were recovered.

In a statement, Checkers confirmed staff members were charged with theft.

“We can confirm that employees from Checkers’ Virginia Circle store have been arrested and charged with theft. The matter is being investigated by the SAPS and we cannot provide any further comment,” the statement said.
