20 drivers fined for illegally using emergency lane on M4

Operations specifically targeting the illegal use of the emergency lane are still being planned, says Durban North SAPS.

MORE than 18 motorists have been fined for using the emergency lanes on the M4 illegally since police began monitoring operations two weeks ago.

Several warnings have also been issued to taxis and motorists using the emergency lane to drop off passengers, specifically near the Swapo Road off-ramp.

“We’ve issued 20 fines to motorists since we began our morning operations. Strict action is going to be taken if people continue to break the law. The use of the emergency lanes is illegal and we will prosecute offenders.

Deokaran added police have issued a warning to repeat offenders saying their vehicles would be impounded should they break the law in a similar manner again.

“It must be said there is a flagrant disregard for the rules of the road, especially when it comes to the use emergency lane to get ahead of traffic,” he said.

At the beginning of this month, Deokaran said more operations, specifically targeting the illegal use of the emergency lane, were being planned.

“We will continue and intensify our operations by bringing these errant drivers to book. Drivers and owners of these vehicles must be fully aware this type of behaviour is not tolerated as it could endanger other motorists observing the rules of the road,” he said.
