City’s water department gets a ‘tap’ on the back

Local councillor Bobby Maharaj has encouraged all City employees to work efficiently.

LOCAL councillor Bobby Maharaj has applauded the eThekwini Municipality’s Water and Sanitation department for what he calls ‘excellent service.’ On Saturday 4 August, Kenville residents were faced with water shortage after a pipe burst in their area.

After calling the water department to report the matter, City plumbers were forced to cut off the water supply until the pipe could be fixed.

“On Sunday morning, 5 August, I woke up to a flood of messages complaints about not having water.  When I called the City I was told this was due to a pipe leak in the area. On Saturday night when the pipe burst, plumbers had to cut the water off while they fixed the pipe,” explained Maharaj.

In their text messages to Maharaj, residents also voiced their concern as the plumbers had only gone to cut the water but a few hours later construction had not begun.
Maharaj said while he understood residents’ frustrations, he was pleased that the City workers were already buzzing on site before he could do a follow-up.

“Generally the City is known to take longer when fixing things like burst pipes. “Before I could even do a follow up the contractor and his workers had already started repairing the pipe. Even when I went on site myself to see what was happening, I was welcomed by the hardworking men who were clearly doing their best to make sure that the job is done timeously. I was very impressed.”

The burst asbestos pipe in Kenville was believed to have been a result of the fact that the pipe is old and started to wear off.
He concluded by encouraging all City employees to work efficiently. He also thanked the residents for their patience while repairs were being made.
