Stats SA census being carried out in uMhlanga

FIELDWORKERS from Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) are currently -in field mobilising communities to prepare for data collection from selected areas in Kwa-Zulu Natal from 1 to 21 August. The collections are for the Census 2021 New Methodologies Test.

The aim of the test is to establish respondents’ preferred method of responding to the census questionnaire since the introduction of new methods of data collection based on advanced technology, thus providing respondents with various options of ensuring that they participate in a census.

Several workers have been deployed in the uMhlanga area and will be visiting properties in the area. Last week concerned residents contacted uMhlanga ward councillor, Heinz de Boer, to find out if the census was legitimate.

“I’ve fielded queries from residents about the legitimacy of the census fieldworkers and I’ve confirmed that this is a legitimate Stats SA lead initiative. Some residents were concerned this was a scam as some people have been robbed by suspects posing as municipal workers, which is not the case here. If residents are concerned they should ask the fieldworkers to produce their ID cards which shows the relevant details,” he said.

Statistician general, Risenga Maluleke, said the Census 2021 New Methodologies Test is one of the various tests that will be conducted in preparation of the Census 2021.

“We appeal to household members in the selected areas of Hillcrest and uMhlanga to welcome our Fieldworkers into your households upon positively identifying themselves,” he said.
