La Lucia pipe replacement project to stop bursts

THE City is embarking on a pipe replacement project and hopes it will put an end to a number of pipe bursts in the La Lucia area. uMhlanga ward councillor, Heinz de Boer said in recent weeks, ailing infrastructure, especially with underground water mains, had come to the fore in the area, following a burst on Armstrong Avenue (at the intersection of William Campbell Drive).

Several roads including, Ray Paul Drive, Oakleigh Avenue, Impala Crescent, Belmont Gardens, Gainsford Place and Wilden Place will be part of the replacement project.

Last week Northglen News met with De Boer at the site of the latest burst on Armstrong Avenue.

“This is a much needed project and one we have been waiting for the last five years. The City plans to replace the old asbestos cement pipes with PVC pipes which are more durable. The problem at this particular intersection is the water main runs under people’s driveways and each burst affects them. The City plans to move the pipe as well as replace it,” he said.

De Boer said the project is due to start in the next month.

“I’m very pleased with the project as the City loses thousands of litres of water with each burst and thousands of rands to fix the leak and reinstate the road. I’m told there will be a public liaison officer who residents will be able to access and who will be going around to homes to inform them of the project,” he said.

The city is due to start with William Campbell Drive first as it is one of the busiest roads in the area.

“The other part of the project involves the use of the park at the bottom of William Campbell Drive and Old Bush Road. The City will be moving in heavy equipment and containers for the project and the park will be reinstated once the project is complete,” he said.
