La Lucia resident assaulted during armed robbery

The suspects took some of the family’s jewellery, Kruger coins and cell phones.

A LA Lucia man was brutally assaulted by a gang of armed robbers when they broke into his home on Belmont Gardens on Thursday morning. According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, both the man and his wife were tied up during the ordeal.

“The suspects forced open the door of the home before holding up the family. The family are unsure if there were  five or six men involved in the robbery. The gang tied-up the homeowner and pistol-whipped him several times demanding to know where the safe was. They then tied-up his wife using electric cables and continued to assault the homeowner asking for the safe. Eventually the suspects located a number of valuables and placed a blanket over their heads while they ransacked the home,” he said.

Blue Security community and media liaison officer Andreas Mathios, who also responded to the scene, said one of the suspects was armed with a firearm while the others were armed with knives.

“They loaded a television, small appliances and other valuables into the family’s vehicle. But it seems that they had difficulty and were unable to drive the vehicle because they eventually fled on foot. The suspects managed to take some of the family’s jewellery, Kruger coins and cell phones with them but they left all the other valuables in the vehicle. It is unclear whether the suspects escaped in a getaway vehicle or whether they jumped into a taxi to get away,” Mathios said.
