WIN:Tickets to annual show and ‘upscale’ your koi know-how

The KZN Koi Show has been hosted by the South African Koi Keepers Society for the last 17 years.

KOI enthusiasts are once again invited to attend the annual KZN Koi Show hosted by the South African Koi Keepers Society (SAKKS).

The event that has been running for more than 17 years will be held at the Shongweni County Club on 21 (8am to 5pm) and 22 (9am to 3pm) July.

The public will be able to interact with koi dealers as well as observe the colourful oriental carps in the koi championships.

What’s more, koi owners will also be able to receive expert advice on how to take care of their prized fish, how to create the perfect pond, where to buy the best food or additional fish.

Bonsai plants and other Koi accessories will also be showcased at the event.

According to Umgeni Park resident, Gerard Loumeau, who is an avid koi keeper and a member of SAKKS, the event is ideal for people who want to get into koi keeping but are not sure where to start.

“There are so many things about these fish that people do not know that it can feel overwhelming. For example, many people don’t realise that the fish, often referred to as living jewels, are prone to sunburn,” he said.

The most basic, and arguably the most important, step one must remember to keep healthy and thriving koi, he said, was to maintain good quality water.

For more information on koi keeping and the annual show visit the SAKKS’s Facebook page. Tickets costs R20 per adult and R10 for children under 12.
