Full moon spring tide warning: What you need to know

The effects of the full moon are expected to last into the weekend.

THE National Sea Rescue Institute has issued a warning, urging the public to exercise extreme caution around the coastline for the next couple of days.

According to NSRI Spokesperson, Craig Lambinon, rough sea conditions – brought on by cold fronts and high wind speeds – together with the start of the full moon spring tide “will result in unfavourable and rough sea conditions around the coastline”.

The full moon causes a higher than normal high tide, a lower than normal low tide and stronger than normal rip currents. The effects of the full moon are expected to last into the weekend.

“NSRI urge public members walking and hiking along the coastline, anglers fishing from the shoreline, boaters, deep-sea fishermen, sailors and sailboarders, surfers and paddlers to exercise caution,” he said.

Parents are also urged to ensure that children have responsible adult supervision around all water, he added.

Lambinon further explained that the spring tide is a natural monthly occurrence, which unfolds during the full moon as well as the new moon.

He said the phenomenon peaks on the day of the full moon or new moon and lasts for at least two days after.
