Mercedes gang rob two La Lucia homes

There have been six armed home invasions in the last 10 days in the North Durban area.

TWO La Lucia homes were targeted by an armed gang using a white Mercedes Benz on Wednesday afternoon. The spike in armed home invasions brought the number of robberies to six in the last 10 days. Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North police said the spike was worrying but police were doing everything they could to stop the gangs.

The latest incidents occurred Forest Crescent and Homeford Drive (less than two kilometres apart). In the respective incidents a domestic worker and gardener were held up and made to lie on the ground during the robberies.

“In the Forest Crescent incident, the domestic worker was accosted by a man wearing a balaclava who pointed a firearm at her. He ordered her into the house where she noticed four other men. The men told her to lie on the ground and keep quiet. They fled stealing a TV, laptops and an undisclosed amount of cash from a safe,” he said.

Deokaran added the second robbery involved the same vehicle and six suspects. However the suspects were allegedly disturbed making off with a TV and a brush cutter.

“We are concerned about the spike in house robberies but we have a number of initiatives in place to combat the crime in the area. We’ve managed to arrest three suspects who were targeting homes bordering the N2 and are doing everything we can to arrest the gangs operating in our area,” he said.

Just an hour before the armed robberies in La Lucia, an elderly woman was tied up and bound by two men, one of whom was allegedly her gardener, in a home invasion on Wednesday.
