Man hijacked at M41 off-ramp in uMhlanga

The hijacked vehicle was later involved in an accident, however the suspects remain at large.

DURBAN North SAPS are investigating a hijacking case which allegedly took place on Saturday at about 11pm. According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, the driver who was with a friend had stopped at the traffic lights at the off-ramp (turning towards Gateway) when the incident occurred.

What is more, the hijackers also took the victims on a two hour ride that ended near Waterloo.

“The victim said as they pulled up to the traffic lights they were approached by two men, one of whom was armed with a handgun. The friends were forced into the backseat of the car and told to keep their heads down. They allege the hijackers drove around for two hours before they were asked to jump out of the vehicle.

“The suspects then asked for the victims’ shoes and valuables before driving off. The duo could not identify where they were as there were no landmarks they recognised. They found a river which they followed until they reached a main road near Waterloo. The hijacked vehicle, a company van, was later involved an accident and the suspects fled the scene. At this stage no arrests have been made and our investigations are ongoing,” Deokaran said.

The incident comes on the back of two smash-and-grab incidents at the same intersection.

While there has not been a spike in incidents, police have warned motorists to be especially vigilant at the intersection.
