R35.9m set aside for Metro Police infrastructure revamp

The City added new infrastructure will also be built to house the City’s Horse Unit which they view as a vital component of the Metro Police force.

THE City said it has plans to bolster Metro Police infrastructure which includes the building of a new police station in Verulam as well as a new Metro Police Horse Unit. These revamps will ensure Metro Police continues to provide effective service delivery by enforcing City by-laws and other crime prevention measures.

The planned upgrades were outlined in a report tabled at the last Full Council meeting at the end of April.

The tabled report outlined various upgrades to be undertaken to Metro Police infrastructure which will assist to ensure that they continue to provide a valuable service to all residents.

Among the work to be undertaken includes repair work on buildings, the installation of new air conditioners, building of new horse stables, since the horses will move from the New Market Stables as well as building a new police station in Verulam.

“Cameras will also be installed and monitored to mitigate the risk of loss in the uniform stores and the armoury. This will go a long way to prevent the missing of firearms and uniforms. Some of the buildings which will be revamped include the Metro Police headquarters situated at 16 Archie Gumede Place, the Training Academy at Lahee Park in Pinetown, the KwaMashu Police Station, Verulam Police Station, Khuzimpi Shezi Police Station in uMlazi, a new Metro Police Horse Unit and Queensburgh stores.

“The report stated that 20 percent of the R35.9 million budgeted for capital programmes in the 2019/20 financial year will be made available during the 2018/19 financial year. This amounts to R7.2 million with the balance used to complete the projects during 2019. New infrastructure will also be built to house the City’s Horse Unit which is a vital component of the Metro Police force and will ensure the horses are well cared for. Metro Police is one of the units which contributes to making eThekwini,” the City said in a statement.
