18 drunk drivers nabbed on M4

Deokaran said police would be holding roadblocks at various points along the M4 throughout the year.

DURBAN North SAPS with Metro Police held a roadblock on the M4 just before the Virginia off-ramp on Sunday night resulting in the arrest of 18 drunk drivers. The drivers arrested on the night now means that in the last 15 roadblocks held at night, more than 200 drunk drivers have been arrested and charged.

According to Captain Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, several motorists were also fined for driving without a licence.

“Being arrested for drunk driving is not a misdemeanor, it is a serious crime and a preventable choice. We have a zero tolerance approach for drunken driving, so appeals for leniency because some people view this as a ‘lesser crime’ are ridiculous. We will continue to host roadblocks to try to ensure safety on our roads,” Deokaran said.

Deokaran said police would be holding roadblocks at various points along the M4 throughout the year.
