LISTEN-North Durban residents angry over non-delivery of orange bags

Residents are reminded to continue using clear bags for all recyclables as we are still experiencing challenges with the supply of orange bags

SEVERAL north Durban residents have voiced their unhappiness over the non-delivery of orange refuse bags used for recyclable materials. Some residents say they haven’t received orange bags for more than six months.

The Durban Solid Waste (DSW) Orange Bag Domestic Recycling Project, which began in August 2007 as a pilot project in the Highway area, has proved to be a huge success throughout eThewkini. According to the City, the project enables ‘956 000 households around Durban to recycle a total of 71 000 tonnes of paper and plastic every month’.

One resident who spoke to the Northglen News anonymously, said he was at his wit’s end over the lack of non-delivery.

“Not only are we not receiving orange bags from the City, but we are also not getting the items we recycled collected. I can’t understand why the City have not found an alternative supplier, surely this can’t be the only company in KZN. Some of the residents around me have stopped recycling because of the lack of delivery of the City, which is sad to see,” he said.

Here is what Durban North ward councillor, Shaun Ryley had to say:

When asked why the City had not delivered orange bags, the City said it was experiencing challenges, but would not elaborate on them.

“EThekwini Municipality’s Cleansing and Solid Waste Unit wishes to inform residents that the domestic recycling programme has resumed in the affected areas. Residents are reminded to continue using clear bags for all recyclables as we are still experiencing challenges with the supply of orange bags

“The Municipality would like to thank residents for their continued support and participation in the programme. The City remains committed to practicing proper waste management through reducing, reusing and recycling,” said eThekwini Municipality Head of Communications Unit, Tozi Mthethwa.
