AA furious at rock throwing incidents

Be careful how you change lanes when trying to avoid rock throwers.

ROCK throwers have struck again, this time on the N3 towards Durban between Sherwood and Brickfield Road. The incident comes two days after a rock was hurled at a passing car in Glen Anil (Old North Coast Road at the bridge just past Cypress Drive, heading towards Phoenix).

In today’s incident the suspect threw the rock at a passing motorist striking the windscreen of the car.

This marks the sixth rock throwing incident,  since the deaths of Amina Haffejee, 16, and her brother Abdur Raheem, 7, who died when a boulder struck the windscreen of the car they were travelling in on the N2.

In a statement today the Automobile Association (AA) said the incidents were of ‘concern’ and labelled them ‘barbaric’ and ‘cowardly’.

“These attacks, because this is how they must be viewed, are barbaric and cowardly. Throwing rocks off bridges onto vehicles below is extremely dangerous and can, as we have seen, cause death and severe injuries to the driver and passengers of the vehicles,” said AA spokesman, Layton Beard

Beard warned that the tip given to motorists to avoid rock throwing incidents must be practiced with caution.

“There is a practice to change lanes immediately before entering a bridge to avoid becoming a victim. This may work if there is no other traffic around, and you are able to move freely between lanes. However, this is problematic if there are other cars who have the same idea. Stick to the speed limits, always obey the rules of the road, and always be vigilant of what other drivers are doing,” suggests the AA.
