High-speed chase leads to shootout after Effingham robbery

Two firearms, live ammunition, house breaking implements and stolen property was recovered in the incident.

A HIGH-SPEED chase and shootout in Avoca Hills on Wednesday evening led to the recovery of several stolen items as well as ammunition. According to Kyle van Reenen of Marshall Security, the vehicle in question, a Hyundai Accent, had earlier that day been involved in the hit-and-run in eMdloti, however the driver and his accomplices fled the scene.

“The vehicle was fitted with false registration plates. The driver of the vehicle collided with a member of the public and then fled in an unknown direction. Information was circulated to all services in the greater Durban area to be on the lookout.

“Shortly after 5pm, a house robbery was reported in Bhamo Avenue, Effinhgam. The vehicle was spotted by the Marshall Security Special Operations Team, fleeing up Queen Nandi Drive towards Avoca Hills and a high-speed chase ensued,” he said.

According to Van Reenen, the suspects eventually abandoned the vehicle on Whinstone Grove in Avoca Hills.

“Four suspects jumped out of the vehicle and opened fire on our officers, fleeing on foot into nearby dense bushes. With the assistance of the SAPS K9 unit, an extensive search of the area was conducted, however the suspects managed to evade arrest.

“Two firearms, live ammunition, house breaking implements and property confirmed to have been stolen from the premises in Bhamo Avenue, were all recovered in the vehicle,” he said.
