Teenager evades armed mugger in Gateway toilets

The female suspect is still at large.

DURBAN North police are looking for a female suspect involved in an attempted robbery at Gateway Theatre of Shopping last Monday. According to station spokesman, Capt Raymond Deokaran, the victim, a teenager was accosted in the women’s toilets by a female suspect who tried to rob her at knife-point.

“The 17-year-old girl was going to the toilets when she noticed a woman following her. The suspect, then pulled out a knife, threatening the victim. Luckily, the victim managed to snatch the knife from her attacker and ran out of the toilet. The female suspect followed her out the toilet but managed to flee the scene. The incident occurred at about 12.35pm. The knife used in the incident was recovered,” he said.

Gateway Theatre of Shopping management confirmed the incident had taken place: “Gateway is aware of the reported case and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the alleged incident. The safety of our shoppers is paramount and we are working closely with our security department and the relevant local authorities to investigate further.”

The incident comes two weeks after a similar incident near the cinema level of the busy mall. In that instance, a suspect allegedly approached a woman, pretending to need help. He then pulled out a knife and demanded her handbag before fleeing on foot with the stolen items.

The mugging was the first robbery at the centre since October when armed suspects stormed a popular clothing store.

No arrests have been made as yet by the Durban North SAPS.
