Two hijackers killed after high-speed chase

A 9mm pistol with ammunition was recovered from the deceased suspects.

TWO alleged hijackers were fatally wounded after they opened fire on pursuing police in KwaMashu on Saturday night.  The men, were part of a gang of five, who hijacked a 27-year-old man in Newtown C in Inanda on Saturday just before midday.

According to provincial police spokesperson, Captain Nqobile Gwala members from Inanda Cluster responded to the incident and the chased after the suspects. The high speed chase led towards L Section in KwaMashu.

“The suspects started to fire shots at the SAPS members who returned fire. During the exchange of gunfire, two suspects, aged 20 and 25 were fatally wounded. Three suspects managed to flee the scene on foot and are still being sought by the police. A 9mm pistol with ammunition was recovered from the deceased suspects. Charges of carjacking, attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearm and inquest are being investigated,” Gwala said.

The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa praised the members for their quick reaction in responding to the crime scenes.

“I am glad that no injuries were sustained by police officers. We want to reiterate that police officers will always defend themselves when attacked by ruthless criminals,” he said.
