Arson case opened after uMhlanga restaurant fire

It is believed three suspects are involved but the motive for the fire is unclear.

DURBAN North SAPS has opened a case of arson and malicious damage to property after a fire was started at an uMhlanga eatery on Tuesday morning. The fire was started on the stairwell of the restaurant at Umhlanga Plaza around 4am, Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North said.

A security guard at the complex contacted uMhlanga Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP) who in turn called the uMhlanga Fire Station to extinguish the small fire on Lagoon Drive.

“When Durban North SAPS arrived, plastic cold drink bottles containing remnants of petrol were found at the scene. Thankfully no one was injured. A case of arson has been opened,” Deokaran said.

It is believed three suspects are involved but the motive for the fire is unclear.

A tenant, who did not want to be named, said there was minimal damage to the deck of the restaurant.

“We don’t know why this is being done or who the suspects are. Police are reviewing CCTV footage of the incident,” he said.
