Teen released on bail following uMhlanga rape

The learner involved in the alleged rape has been granted bail and returned to Johannesburg.

THE 18-year-old matric learner accused of raping a fellow learner, known to him, has been released on bail. Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS said the Johannesburg resident was granted R3 000 bail.

“The case has been handed over to the SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Units (SFC) and the learner involved in the incident has been granted bail and returned to Johannesburg,” he said.

The teen, believed to be from Randburg was arrested last week for the rape of an 18-year-old girl at an uMhlanga hotel, confirmed Capt Thulani Zwane, provincial SAPS spokesman.

While he could not divulge details, it is believed the victim was asked to come up to the suspect’s room before he forced himself on the teenager. It is understood the two were in uMhlanga for the annual matric rage festival.
