VIDEO: Mamba found under living room couch in Avoca
From December until the end of February, mamba activity is at its peak, warns snake expert.
FROM the beginning of December to the end of February, there is no rest for Durban North’s snake man, Jason Arnold. The 39-year-old said he has received a number of call-outs for black mambas, considered to be one of Africa’s most dangerous and feared species. Arnold recently captured a mamba measuring 2.2 metres from a home in Avoca.
What is more he has rescued five mambas in the last week from Verulam, Avoca and Inanda.
In the latest video, Arnold rescued a mamba from Colbeck Road home. The snake entered the home without being noticed, but fortunately the family’s pet dog picked up on it.

“The dog had been barking frantically at something under a sleeper couch in the lounge, and this prompted the eldest child (about 10 years old) to kneel down and investigate. Little did he know he was about to come face to face with Africa’s most feared, respected and iconic snakes, the black mamba,” he said.

“From now until the end of February, mamba activity is at its peak. I urge residents to be a little more aware during this time of year, especially when going into places like cluttered garden sheds/storerooms, lifting up pool pump covers or clearing clutter around the home or garden.”
