Anger over municipality’s ‘temporary’ sinkhole solution

Ward councillor, Bobby Maharajh as well as several residents fear the sinkholes may widen with heavy downpours.

REDHILL residents have expressed their anger and frustration over the City’s temporary solution to two large sinkholes in the area. The sinkholes situated on Bailey and Victor Roads are large enough for a person to stand in. There are six depressions within a two kilometre radius due to several burst water pipes which has caused a natural depression in the ground surface.

Last week Northglen News met with ward councillor, Bobby Maharajh as well as several residents who say they fear the sinkholes may widen with heavy downpours.

Babu Haripershad, said her son who regularly uses the road has had several close calls travelling up Victor Road.

“As you come off Chris Hani Road (North Coast), you are forced to drive around the sinkhole forcing you into the opposite lane which is dangerous considering the driver at the top of the rise doesn’t see you until it’s too late. The problem now is the municipality is only filling the sinkholes with sand which keeps washing away when it rains. We are not happy about the fact that the City is just putting sand over the sinkhole. They are just looking for a temporary solution which is not good enough,” Haripershad says.

Ward councillor Bobby Maharajh said though the road had not caved in yet, it had weakened several sections of it.

“It [the sinkhole] is absolutely huge and poses a danger to motorists. The fact that I can actually stand in one up to the my knee shows there is a serious problem. I feel the municipality needs to cordon off the sections to repair it. The problem is particularly bad at night, the street lighting is not good and for someone who doesn’t know the area it makes it all the more dangerous. If we have heavy rains again I anticipate the problem will get worse,” he said.
