Three arrested after eMdloti theft

Police are trying to link the suspects to other crimes in the area.

DURBAN North SAPS has praised the work of the eMdloti CPF and the security guard who secured the arrest of two suspects attempting to steal an outboard motor from a boat at a South Beach Road complex. The thieves and a getaway driver were nabbed before being handed over to the Durban North SAPS.

The incident occurred at about 2.30am on Monday morning.

“The getaway driver, who was using a white Mercedez Benz, had parked near the complex while his accomplices derailed the main gate. They had cut the cables and were attempting to carry the outboard motor out the complex when they were spotted by a security guard. Members of the CPF who were also called to the scene chased after the suspects on foot.

“Officers from the station also cordoned off the area and the suspects were found about a block away from the scene of the crime. They are due to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court later this week. At this point, we have traced the registration of the vehicle and I can confirm it was not stolen. We are trying to link the suspects to other crimes in the area,” said Durban North spokesman, Capt Raymond Deokaran.

The arrests come days after police across the province arrested 807 suspects for various crimes. More than 200 suspects were arrested for drunken driving. During the operations police also recovered drugs such as rock cocaine, dagga and heroine as well as five unlicensed firearms, four stolen vehicles and a large quantity of alcohol.
